My name is Amelia Hare and I'm a 4th generation Girl Scout. I'm a 2021 graduate of the Northwest School on Capitol Hill. I love to read, make art, cook, and enjoy the outdoors.

Shadow on the Wall

I've been living in Seattle, Washington for almost five years now. When I first arrived here, I noticed I had a lot more access to information about being LGBTQ+. That included many wonderful books!  I remember scouring my local library for every queer YA book I could find. While I did find what I was looking for, sometimes I wished it could be easier and my searching made me wonder if other young people were having the same experience.

When it came time for me to start my Gold Award Project (The highest award in Girl Scouting) I knew I wanted my focus to be quality queer YA literature. The original scope of my project involved physical little queer libraries that were specifically tailored to their homes in local safe-space businesses in the Capitol hill neighborhood. I built a few book boxes, did a LOT Of reading, and made connections with local businesses.

        And then the Pandemic hit.

COVID-19 cancelled school where I worked with my queer club and shut down the businesses I planned to collaborate with. It also kept me away from the public libraries that sparked the project's concept. After struggling for months to make progress, my team encouraged me to change my goals. With the long-awaited deadline approaching, I switched from building physical libraries to constructing an online representation of my findings.

Perhaps on my gap year before I attend Lewis & Clark college in Portland, I can resurrect the original library box project. I still have two partially-complete little queer libraries that need good homes, and a semi-fleshed out checkout system to utilize.
For now, I hope you enjoy the Little Queer Library project online! I couldn't have made this happen without my team of supporters.

THANK YOU!
